Thinking about Swords

So the other week Duane came home from his small group with a sword. A literal real life sword. It was a little creepy. I don't even like the giant knife we have in the house-eek. Anyway, it was a nifty tool from his men's group. Every week someone different gets the sword and then that man gets the privilege of doing a mini devotional type activity.

After a rough week-it was cool to have it in the house. It was a reminder for me to remind Duane that he is a mighty warrior of God. So very cool-not that I am sad the sword had to go away.

Here is what we came up with for him talk about:

I would like to share with you guys something I have been struggling with and perhaps some of you have been struggling with this also. I have forgotten for whom I am working. Yes, I have been going to work everyday thinking that I am doing a good job, only to find out that according to my supervisor, I am not. Hearing something like that is like getting kicked in the gut. It knocked the wind out of me and leaves me with the question-so now what?

Ephesians 6:5-8
5 Slaves, obey your earthly masters with deep respect and fear. Serve them sincerely as you would serve Christ. 6 Try to please them all the time, not just when they are watching you. As slaves of Christ, do the will of God with all your heart. 7Work with enthusiasm, as though you were working for the Lord rather than for people. 8 Remember that the Lord will reward each one of us for the good we do, whether we are slaves or free.

After thinking about it and praying about it I realized that I was not doing all that I should be doing. I was not in a situation like Job where I have lost everything except my life. I am not exactly in a situation like Manasseh where I have made horrible decisions and I do need to ask the Lord for forgiveness for the mistakes I have made.

2 Chronicles 33
13 And when [Manasseh] prayed, the Lord listened to him and was moved by his request. So the Lord brought Manasseh back to Jerusalem and to his kingdom. Then Manasseh finally realized that the Lord alone is God!

I have made some bad decisions that I need to go back and correct. I probably am sitting in a situation sort if like David. I am working for my version of Saul. He is moody and I can’t quite figure out what he wants. I want to be like David though and serve my boss and do my job to the best of my abilities. Even when it seems unfair-my boss has not tried to kill me.

1 Sam 18
5 Whatever Saul asked David to do, David did it successfully. So Saul made him a commander over the men of war, an appointment that was welcomed by the people and Saul’s officers alike.
6 When the victorious Israelite army was returning home after David had killed the Philistine, women from all the towns of Israel came out to meet King Saul. They sang and danced for joy with tambourines and cymbals.[a] 7 This was their song:
“Saul has killed his thousands,
and David his ten thousands!”
8 This made Saul very angry. “What’s this?” he said. “They credit David with ten thousands and me with only thousands. Next they’ll be making him their king!” 9 So from that time on Saul kept a jealous eye on David.

I am doing my very best to remember that I am working to serve Jesus and only Jesus. My supervisors and co-workers, I need to see as Jesus sees them. I need to step up and lead them in a way that is Godly and honoring to Christ. I can only do this by first seeking God through prayer and then by leading my family. In all things I do, I want to do them for the glory of God and to be a servant of Jesus.
